Opportunities to play bridge in Berlin in the foreseeable future

Last updated: 24 April 2024 PM.

(For newcomers to the subject: please refer to the previous posts in this category for (almost) anything else you need to know).

Friday 19 April – the following VHS course has started and runs till 14 June (with the exception of 10 May). It is still available for registration : “Englisch B1 plus – Learn to play Bridge in English”. Course number Pa4101F.

The VHS is closed on 10 May. If there is interest, we can play at my place.

And although it is (very) early days yet to be thinking about the summer period, I just want to mention that after the course finishes on 14 June, I will already have most of my planned travel for this year done, so during the second half of June, all of July, the first three weeks of August, and most of September, I will most likely be in Berlin, and we can play at my place if there is interest. More about that towards the end of the course.

In that regard, just to pick up on some comments made the other evening, everybody is welcome to suggest other evenings, rather than Fridays, when they might find it more convenient to play over the summer. So speak up, now or later, and we’ll see if we can find some common ground.

Anyone who sees this and is interested in playing bridge, and who is not yet on Rob’s mailing list, and also not on my radar, please e-mail me here.

Opportunities to play bridge privately this autumn

During the VHS course which starts on 22 September (which WILL go a head, but it is still possible to sign up), there is a gap of two weeks (presumably due to school holidays) end October/early November.

I am, for now, keeping Friday 27 October and Friday 3 November free in case there is interest in playing bridge at my place on those two evenings. LAST DAY TO RESPOND : 22 October.

If so, or if you have any questions, ideas, or suggestions, please email me here.

Playing bridge in Berlin during autumn 2023

The next opportunity to play bridge (mostly but not exclusively) in English is by attending this VHS course starting on 22 September.

As long as the course is running, we will not be playing elsewhere, at least not on a regular basis, but if there is interest in playing ad hoc, or spontaneously, please do not hesitate to suggest a date.

I’ll start: Presumably because of autumn school holidays, there is a two-week gap in the course (weeks 43 and 44), so if anyone is interested in playing at my place during those weeks, please speak up, either by e-mailing me here, or by contacting Rob, the teacher of the VHS course – or using his mailing list if you are already on it.

Right now, the only date on which it will NOT be possible to play at my place is Thursday, 26 October.

If you do suggest a date or dates, please do not forget to specify the time of day that you would be able to start.

One more opportunity to play bridge privately

EDIT 7 SEPTEMBER: PLEASE DISREGARD BELOW TWO SUGGESTED DATES. THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY IS IN THE VHS COURSE STARTING 22 SEPTEMBER, AS PER MOST RECENT POST.

Now looking for people interested in playing bridge on Friday, 8 September. We already have three people signed up, so need at least one more, since I will have to leave for a couple of hours.

((We usually play from 18.00 hrs, but if enough people are interested in playing from 15.00 to 18.00 (or longer) please let me know and we will try to arrange that)).

The week after (15 September), I will be busy with Berlin Art Week related events on internations.org, but if four or more people want to play, I can hand over the key to my flat. From my point of view, that would be perfectly OK.

The VHS course, linked to in previous posts, starts on 22 September. Once that gets going, we will probably not be playing regularly, but if there is interest in playing ad hoc, or spontaneously, please do not hesitate to suggest a date.

For those who wish, and are not already on it, there is also a mailing list.

Please direct all ideas, questions, and suggestions, to me by e-mail here.

REGULARLY UPDATED

Here are my suggestions for playing bridge at my place up until the start of the VHS course on 22 September. Please let me know on this e-mail address (click here) – or by replying to the e-mail you have received if you are on the mailing list – if you are interested in playing on one or more of those dates, keeping in mind, that if I do not hear from anybody, I am not keeping dates free forever :-).

Please also note that if we are between five and seven people, we take it in turns, and if we are ever eight people, I have a second bridge table :-).

And finally, if you have just recently dropped in, there are a couple of previous posts in this category that explains what we are about. Also, you do not have to reply in English is Germany is easier for you :-).

Week 34:

So far, Monday 21 or Tuesday 22, plus Friday 25 August from 18.30 (with Friday my personal preference).

Week 35:

Friday 1 September, any time.

Week 36:

4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 September any time. Right now, I have one person for 8 September.

Week 37:

9 to 17 September (Berlin Art Week): no bridge opportunities (but a lot of art-related events on internations.org :-)), so it is not because I have accidentally skipped that week.

Week 38:

Monday 18 September any time.

Feel free to comment, commit, confirm here, and please note that I usually keep an afternoon/evening free for bridge up until noon the day before.

As agreed between those of us who played last night, next week there will be one definite and one potential opportunity to play:

We are definitely playing on Thursday, 10 August, starting at 18.00 hrs, so please let me know some time during the week whether you can attend, to give us an idea of how many people to expect.

Then there is a suggestion to also play on Saturday, 12 August, afternoon and/or evening. In this case, I would like to know soonest whether at least three others are interested, including your preferred times of day.

More generally, whether you are by now a “regular” or if you would like to play but have not yet been able to join us, feel free to let me/us know your preferred days and times for the next seven weeks, and let’s see what can be arranged.

And finally, in case anybody is checking in here for the first time, please also read the previous posts, and please remember that neither your bridge skills nor your English skills need to be particularly good in order to join us :-). There is a bridge teacher among us most of the time, and we have books, and teach each other, and very often it all happens in a mixture of English and German, and in an extremely informal atmosphere.

A group of us have now been playing at my place twice, each time in two shifts, and it has worked out well.

Next bridge evening will be on Thursday 3 August, starting at 18.00 hrs. Please let me know if you are able to join us, and also your approximate arrival time if not around 18.00 hrs.

If you have not been part of the previous two bridge events, please also see the previous post in this category for further details.

After next week, we will probably go back to playing Fridays, until Rob’s next course (https://www.vhsit.berlin.de/VHSKURSE/BusinessPages/CourseDetail.aspx?id=686954). Watch this space ……

And finally, feel free to tell others whom you think might be interested.

Dates for July:

In July we will be playing on 21 and 28 July starting at 15.00 hrs, but it is OK to arrive later, especially if you don’t mind perhaps having to wait a little while in order to be able to play. We will play till about 22.00 hrs, but again, there is no obligation to stay till that hour.

The venue is near the Jewish Museum in Kreuzberg, and you will get the precise address after signing up on this e-mail address. Please let me know your name and your approximate time of arrival. For obvious reasons of logistics, it is important to know the approximate number of people and their approximate times of attendance.

Note that the limit as to the number of people who can play at any one time is three tables (four at a pinch but the fourth table is less comfortable due to crossbars on two sides, so I guess that would be a matter of first come, first served :-)).

Some prior knowledge of playing bridge is an advantage but most of us who will be playing to start with are relative, but not complete, beginners. Everything is on a very informal basis – no tournaments or anything like that.

Likewise, some basic English and or German skills suffice. We will get by one way or another, as long as you are able to read my posts here, and any e-mails I will be sending you on the subject. And as far as I am concerned, playing bridge only works in one language, and that language is not German, and definitely also not Danish, or any other language than English. (Sorry :-)).

Please bring your own sustenance. There are three cafés next to and opposite the Jewish Museum, and the nearest café to where we will be playing is Café Nea, Lindenstraße 26 (open till 17.00 hrs).

If the need arises, food can of course also be ordered in from a delivery service.

Depending how this develops, further dates will be published here in due course.

ALSO NOTE: A new course, Pa4090H – Learn to play bridge in English, suited for beginners as well as intermediates, starts at VHS Pankow on 22 September. The teacher is Rob Crouch who, with a bit of luck, will also be present at at least some of the private bridge afternoon/evenings mentioned in this and future posts.
