Opportunities to play bridge in English in Berlin in 2025

Last updated: 15 June AM. Will be changed and updated regularly.

BREAKING NEWS: The courses starting in September are now available for registration:

Wednesdays here.

Fridays here.

During the weeks where for one reason or the other there is no bridge course at VHS, we can play occasionally at my place. Where nothing else is stated, we aim at arrivals from 18.15, ready to start playing at 18.30, but for those who can only come later, that is also OK. We’ll start playing as soon as enough people have arrived.

Playing privately is a good opportunity to keep up what you have learnt in the course, and for newcomers to get an introduction to the game, to the teacher, and to the rest of us without committing to a ten-session course right away. Some very basic prior knowledge is an advantage but not a requirement.

The occasional opportunities to play bridge privately in the weeks where VHS is closed, are marked with *** below.

Please note that over the summer, whether VHS courses are running or not, everyone who feels like playing bridge privately and more or less spontaneously should feel free to propose an afternoon or evening.

Some of us are available to play at daytime any day of the week, and additionally, I would often be up for a bridge afternoon or evening if there is a rainy Saturday or Sunday coming up.

Zingst end of May 2025

Apart from desperately needing to see the sea (this time the Baltic Sea – not a real sea if you ask me, but it will do for now :-)) – the reason why right now was this Fotofestival Horizonte Zingst,

Day one arrival on schedule, finally getting some value out of my Deutschlandticket :-). All of Zingst dominated by all things photography.

Going for a walk after dinner, I noticed scores of swallows doing their superfast, erratic aerial acrobatics, so that is something I will be practising – finally getting a decent photo of one.

Zingst is a very pleasant town, touristy obviously, but people behaving normally, no hordes of druken, loudmouthed Scandinavians or British tourists. A good variety of restaurants, though only German and Italian, some of them very good indeed. Unfortunately just one Asian restaurant – Chinese – which was OK but not great.

I nearly forgot to take photos of Zingst itself just to show what it looks like – until the last day, so there are a couple of photos at the end of the post.

Conclusion – “Horizonte Zingst”, the annual photography festival, was a wonderful experience and I am definitely hoping to attend next year, and this time for the whole festival, and perhaps a bit.

26 and 27 May I attended this Masterclass Abstraktes und Kontraste, masterfully led by Kai Hornung and Nicolas Alexander Otto

Photos from day one (26 May afternoon and evening):

Photos from day two (27 May 03.30 to 06.00 and 14.00 to 18.00. I have to say, Kai and Alex have a real talent for organising sunrises. No mean feat in a week of mostly clouds at that time of day,

I did get a lot of good tips and tricks during the masterclass, but did I really learn something I did not know already? A lot of ICM was encouraged, and I have been doing that on and off for years, until I decided that I actually find it a bit kitchy, and then I stop, until I need to do something diffferent or am reminded of the option in a course or workshop.

Day 3 – 28 May – weather forecast said thunder and lightning so I visited most of the exhibitions before attending Kai Hornung’s inspirational pep-talk in the late afternoon. Also spent some time on the beach before and after the talk.

On my last day I had no firm plans, except parts of the festival programme, which I ditched since the weather was nice and I started by walking south to the inland harbour and hop on a short boat tour overlooking the large island which is a bird sanctuary to Barth and back.

Took these on the way home on 30 May:

The German obsession with phone calls (and lies)

Share Button

Another example why Germans are obsessed with phone calls and refuse to use e-mails: They can be rude and lie to you without any documentation (unless of course you record the phone calls, which I should have done yesterday). One of the many reasons I keep my phone on silent and never answer it when it rings.

However, @Global Reparaturservice, https://waschmaschine-reparatur-berlin.com/, mostly refuses to use e-mails but keeps calling and yesterday I finally gave in since they have had one of my kitchen devices for repair and I was looking forward to receiving it back.

After the time slot they had given me had passed, I e-mailed asking whether I should still stay at home and wait, and as usual, they immediately called me and stupidly, I answered. First of all, they claimed they had been at my door, but I had not opened. A downright lie (a local sport – not sure if it is national or just a Berlin thing, but I can no longer count the times I have been lied to after I moved here) since I was at home all the time, and my doorbell works.

Secondly, there was a lot of noise on the line, and they spoke very quickly (another national sport the minute they hear that the customer’s German is far from perfect) so I had to ask them to speak a little more clearly. They then almost shouted, and very, very slowly, completely exaggerating, as if I am both deaf and dumb, gave me a day and a time slot. (Which they subsequently, by e-mail, surprisingly, denied having given me).

And yet, people wonder why I prefer to conduct all such exchanges by e-mail and not by phone.

So how is that boycott of US goods and services going?

******SOME IMPORTANT NEWS, AS WELL AS UPDATES, AT THE END OF THE POST******

As far as I am concerned, and judging by what I hear and read from others – the short answer is “slowly”.

However: scroll down for latest news.

It is not like boycotting Russian good and services (I am not aware of availing myself of any Russian goods and services, though I have to admit I am not certain exactly what Germany, where I have chosen to live, currently depends on from Russia).

And as far as Israeli goods and services go, I have always avoided buying foods (such as oranges and lemons) from there, as well as watching Israeli film and TV, so that is a no-brainer too.

The case of USA is different. The easiest part was avoiding buying things like avocadoes and wine from California which a lot of us started already the first time around – “Trump light – boycott light”. Back then, I also vowed not to set foot in that country again – incidentally, round about the time I also decided not to fly again. I slipped up not so long ago and signed up for a photography retreat in Santa Fé – a place that was on my bucket list pre-Trump – but I woke up, thought – what on earth are you doing you unprincipled sloth – and cancelled that. Since then, I am happy to read that the majority of Europeans are no longer travelling to USA if they can avoid it. Many are now choosing Canada as a holiday destination.

Speaking of that photography retreat – it was organised by my favourite photography course provider – US-based. Because hypocrisy rules, I am currently attending one of their courses (using zoom – another US business ….) since I had already paid for it before the European boycott started to pick up speed. But this will be the last one, and I shall miss those courses greatly.

I am currently busy deleting accounts with gurushots, kelbyone, etc. The next hurdle will be the streaming services. As part of weaning myself off Netflix and Amazon, I no longer watch any US produced films or TV series, and am one click away from deleting my Netflix accoung. I don’t like to think about living without Facebook and all the information I will be missing out on, but sooner or later it will have to go. Instagram will be easier since I never liked that media anyway. And I am not even mentioning that third one.

I hope with time there will be non-US alternatives to all the really difficult, to the point of impossible, ones such as google, microsoft, adobe, zoom and I am sure there are many more that I am just taking for granted – viable alternatives so that we never have to revert to the old US ways again.

This time around, loathing and mistrust is irreversible.

By the way, I am a little bit astonished to learn that the concept of boycotting seems unknown in USA. Many Americans I know simply do not seem to understand it, and are taking it all very personally.

Boycotting goods and services from a country is a completely normal thing to do, and one of the few resources ordinary citizens have. And it is not personal.

USA let somebody run for office who should not even be eligible to be a garbage collector, let a long President, and that person is now doing what he had always said he would be doing and they still voted for him. Now he is planning on handing Europe to Putin on a silver platter, starting with Ukraine (and he is too stupid to realise how Putin is playing him). Also, since he has no understanding of economics at all, having spent his life so far bankrupting one business after another, he is now bankrupting USA and the world.

And like a good would-be dictator, he dodged the draft by lying about an injury, and is now planning a military parade for his next birthday.

Give me a break: NOT boycotting that banana republic would be completely counter-intuitive to me as well as to most other Europeans.

EDIT on 09 April: And now this: https://youtu.be/c143MbcoITw?si=sxEWkTvnA03N5BaF. And I believe those cheering audience sounds are real. Every time we think it can not get more cringe- and puke-worthy. Going completely off-line just so we do not have to be assaulted by the daily dose of vomit coming out of that country seems more and more doable until such time that we have non-US alternatives. Even listening to someone – anyone – speaking with an American accent is becoming unpleasant, much the same as hearing Russian spoken.

The idea of not being perpetually angry is appealing, but will it be better to feel perpetually ignorant?

BREAKING NEWS 15 MAY:

It has finally dawned on me that Capture One is a European company! Well, that settles it then. I can ditch Adobe Creative Cloud! The fact that Capture One cannot replace Photoshop altogether – I shall just have to live with. I usually only use Lightroom anyway, and many say that for Fujifilm, Capture One is actually better than Lightroom, especially when it comes to colour rendition. The satisfaction of boycotting US-based Adobe will be my reward for the foreseeable future, and perhaps a European-owned replacement for Photoshop will appear sooner or later.

So, yes, slowly-slowly very slowly becoming independent of US goods and services.

Update 20 May: Putin continues to play Trump, and the last couple of days more blatantly than ever, and Trump is still too dumb to realise. One might hope that Putin is currently laughing so hard that he gives himself a stroke or a heart attack. I don’t really believe he is capable of even smiling, but he would certainly have good recent to be laughing his head off right now.

“Art of the deal” my a…. If it were not so tragic, it would actually be pretty funny.

Britzer Garten 11 May

This was another one of the bi-weekly birdwatching walks with Bernd Steinbrecher, Freilandlabor Britz.

Unfortunately, as most often happens, a couple or three people were there to yack incessantly and loudly most of the time, ruining the walk for those of us who enjoy being in nature and listening to birdsong, and to what Bernd (and ONLY Bernd) has to say. Had it not been for them, I would have thoroughly enjoyed the walk. Why don’t people like that meet in a café, or join a walking group?

I can only repeat: BREAKING NEWS: Unless you are Bill Clinton or Kofi Annan or someone like that, you are not interesting to listen to. We are all dull as ditchwater and should keep our mouths shut more, and not only in nature.

By the way, I found out that Bernd is not always right :-), and that the Merlin bird recognition app is better than that of NABU.

Pub quizzes and quiznights

Last updated 04 March PM.

UNDER DEVELOPMENT, IN PROGRESS, AND WILL BE UPDATED AS NEEDED AND RELEVANT

“Let’s get quizzical” in Alte Turnhalle on alternate Sundays: The next one is 16 March (sign up here), with Team The Village Idiots NOT attending. The next one I am organising is on 30 March, and on that evening, I already have a full team.

For others who want to attend in future, I strongly recommend trying to start a team of their own, signing up in meetup to secure a place since the quiz is getting more and more popular and as mentioned above, there were 33 teams last time. Even if people do not have a full team, it is easy to find others to complete a team on the night – just arrive early enough, and tell Steve the quizmaster.

Steve usually announces dates a month ahead on instagram here.

—————————–

Here is how it goes: Let’s get Quizical, advertised on Meetup here, on instagram here, and on Facebook here. I have a whatsapp group which everyone can use to communicate about this and putting teams together. It takes place mid-week at 19.30 in alternate weeks in Bergendorf Sundays at 18.30 in alternate weeks in Alte Turnhalle, Holteistraße 6-9 (important to arrive well in time to be seated and ready to start at 18.30).

I have never, and probably never will, attend the mid-week quiznights in James June, but am trying to attend all the ones on alternate Sundays in Alte Turnhalle, and I assume the system is the same: reservations are done either individually or in groups, and up to now, walk-ins have been possible, but the quiz is getting popular and the hall fuller and fuller each time. The majority of tables are reserved for teams who register on meetup, and the rest are “mix-tables” where individuals can get together with walk-ins to form a team. A team is maximum six people.

In both cases, questions are asked in both English and German, the cost of attending is 3 euro per person, and in every other way it follows a classic pub quiz pattern.

Munich and Karlsruhe February

Day 1 train Berlin-Munich not without its glitches: Heating problems and – what else is new on DB – no coffee.

In the afternoon the exhibition on surrealism and antifascism, in Lenbachhaus. Surrealism is in my opinion by far the most interesting of all the -isms, most of which range from insipid and spineless to decorative and pretty and in many cases dull as ditchwater.

Also visiting Dachau on the same occasion.

Day 2 Dachau

Easily reached from the centre of Munich by public transport.

Before you ask, please see this post (scroll down a little).

Like an idiot, I left the camera card in my hotel room, so I only took some snapshots with my phone:

And some in idyllic Dachau centre, in stark contrast to what I am sure everybody knew about what was going on a mere three km away:

Day three train Munich-Karlsruhe and Art Karlsruhe.

I do love a big fat art fair, and this one never disappoints. I had forgotten how big it is, and that it actually merits a tro-day ticket. Perhaps next year ……

Added bonus: to spend a few nights in hotels with functioning heating systems, unlike the one in my own home.

Day four: Before returning to Berlin, I had planned on spending the last morning in Städtische Galerie, but the weather was suddenly spring-like, so I went to the zoo instead. (I had already had a view from my hotel room directly onto the Red Panda enclosure).

Apologies in advance for the overload of images (some of them abstracts) of the great white egret:

Interior Architecture Photography with Lette Akademie 3 to 5 February

Share Button

Although I have always been interested in modern architecture, the particular skill that is architecture photography had gone under my radar till now when someone I had “met” once or twice in zoom courses wrote and said she was coming to Berlin to attend this course – a good opportunity to meet up in person.

Consequently, I signed up at just a few days’ notice, and we met for breakfast each day before the course.

Day one interesting presentations with lots of tips and ideas. Was not in photography mode, did not like the venue, and having to use a tripod ruins my day, if not week or even month or actually makes me lose the will to live, so did not take any photos to fit the brief but only the below:

Day two we went to Technical University, and a strange thing happened: I deliberately photographed human beings, not just one but a whole series. I hope that is not a trend:

Other photos from day two:

Day three a presentation on how to draw up a contract. Not really relevant for me, but interesting and so much information (in German of course) that my head was spinning and I only took the below, totally uninspired photos.

But good course, great teacher, and I learned a lot.
