Tempelhofer Feld with Benedikt Jackowski, Freilandlabor Britz:

I often hear people say – but are there any birds around this time of year? Sure there are. You just have to be aware of them. Yesterday, on my local cemetery (Friedhöfe am Halleschen Tor), for example, I saw five-six different birds (in addition to the usual suspects such as crows and pigeons). And in addition to those that I saw, my Merlin app heard and identified another two or three.

My biggest problem at this time of year, trying to photograph some of them, is that the light conditions are often poor, which is obvious from the photos I manage to take these days.

This morning, I was priviledged to get a private guided tour – unplanned, but I happened to be the only person there. It was extremely interesting to walk and talk and listen to Benedikt. We saw a Buzzard, large flocks of Greenfinches, a handful of Goldfinches, several Kestrels (one catching and subsequently eating a mouse – note the little foot and the tail underneath the branch), and even a Goshawk – apparently rare on Tempelhofer Feld.
